Jorge Villafaña played his first league game at the Estadio Corona Friday night, when los Guerreros of Santos Laguna hosted Chiapas for their week 2 game of the new 2016 Clausura season.

Villafaña in particular had a few shining moments, including a one on one encounter which he helped force into a counter attack for Santos.

His Colombian and Chilean teammates, Andres Renteria and Bryan Rabello, worked together up top, moreso in the second half and eventually were able to grab a goal after a few chances which were saved and cleared. Rabello layed off an exquisite back heel pass to Renteria, who dribbled through two defenders in the area and shot from the left side of the box. His powerful strike beat Chiapas goalkeeper Oscar Jimenez, the ball blasting into the back left of the net.

Villafaña was interviewed after the game and said

“I think we played a really organized game. I think were sharp on the defense and on the counter attack. We could have put more goals in the net but I’m really happy that we got the win tonight.

…We have been working really well all week on the defensive side, but the thing I think that matters the most is that we are always talking to each other, we always covering the backs of the other players. But the chances we create, we have to put them away so we can close the game earlier.”

Next up for Santos is a road game against Club Tijuana at Estadio Caliente next Friday, January 22 where Villafaña will square off against former MLS and LA Galaxy nemesis Juninho.
