FC Porto 3 v Bayern Munich 1 (Wed 15 April 2015) Estádio do Dragão

On a wet night in Porto the German champions Bayern Munich slipped up against the Portuguese side, losing 3-1 in the first leg of the Quarter Finals of the Champions League. Bayern were without a number of key players including French winger Franck Ribery, Dutch winger Arjen Robben, German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and Austrian defender David Alaba.
Bayern’s coach Pep Guardiola criticised the team’s medical department for not having the services of important players and within a couple of days after the match the team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt resigned after 38 years in the role along with 3 of his assistants.

However it was mistakes from the experienced Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso and Brazilian Dante that resulted in Bayern going behind by 2 goals from Ricardo Quaresma in the opening 10 minutes. Thiago Alcántara scored a useful away goal for Bayern before Martínez added a 3rd goal for Porto.

Porto will be feeling relatively optimistic travelling to Munich for the 2nd leg on Tuesday 21 April as they aim to reach their first Champions League semi-final since winning the competition in 2004 under Jose Mourinho. In contrast Bayern will be hoping a better performance at home and perhaps with some players back from injury will help them reach their fourth successive semi-final as they keep their hopes alive of playing in the Final on 6 June in Berlin.
