One of Brazil’s most famous soccer players and the mayor fronting Rio de Janeiro’s build-up to next year’s Olympic games were mentioned in a recording that led to Tuesday’s arrests of one of Brazil’s richest men and a senior politician. Former soccer star Romario and Mayor Eduardo Paes both denied any wrongdoing.

Bayern MunichBayern see slight dip in 2014/15 turnover, profits up (Reuters)

Bayern Munich saw annual turnover dip slightly to 523.7 million ($554.86 million) in the 2014/15 fiscal year but still broke the half a billion barrier for the second successive year as club bosses demanded bigger TV deals to close the gap with the Premier League.

The Bundesliga champions, Germany’s richest club and one of the wealthiest in the world, posted a 528 million euros turnover in the last financial year, their best result in 114 years.

Fox Sports has signed a new media rights deal with Conmebol, the governing body for soccer in South America, that will see the pay-TV broadcaster show the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Sudamericana and the Recopa Sudamericana in Latin America until 2018.

Under the terms of the agreement struck between Fox International Channels and Conmebol, Fox Sports will continue to broadcast the three professional club tournaments live and exclusive through its sports channel portfolio, including Fox Sports, Fox Sports 2, their Premium and HD versions, and its digital platform Fox Play.

BeckenbauerBayern Munich president defends Franz Beckenbauer (ESPN FC)

Bayern Munich defended Franz Beckenbauer from criticism over his role in the scandal concerning Germany’s 2006 World Cup bid on Friday.

Bayern president Karl Hopfner told the club’s annual general meeting that it had Beckenbauer to thank for a “hell of a lot” as player, coach and president, and that the club would not have its new stadium without the 2006 World Cup.

New Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion franchise Minnesota United FC have appointed Populous as the lead architect for their new soccer stadium in Saint Paul, Minnesota, US.

The Populous-designed venue will be constructed on the Snelling-Midway site and is scheduled to be completed in early 2018.

New Chicago Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez said he wanted to have his head coach in place by Thanksgiving, and he has followed up on that statement.

The Fire hired Veljko Paunovic, former Philadelphia Union and veteran European midfielder, as its next manager on Tuesday. The 38-year-old Paunovic guided Serbia to the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup championship this summer, and Chicago will be the first club on his managing résumé. Rodriguez told reporters Tuesday that Greek club Panathinaikos also offered Paunovic its managerial job.

Brazil FA Prez ResignsBrazil’s FA president resigns post on Fifa’s executive committee (the guardian)

The head of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has resigned his post on Fifa’s executive committee.

“Mr Marco Polo Del Nero asked to leave the Fifa executive committee as Conmebol’s representative and he recommended Mr Fernando Sarney as his replacement and that was unanimously approved,” Conmebol said in a statement issued after regional football chiefs met in Brazil.

Uganda URA FCUganda’s URA FC buys taxis for players – to earn more cash (BBC)

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) FC – one of the country’s biggest clubs – have encouraged their players to earn extra cash, by helping them to get into the lucrative motorcycle taxi business.

URA are helping the club’s players to buy motorbikes, commonly known as boda bodas, which are widely used by businesses in Uganda to transport people and luggage.

Football fans in France will not be able to attend away matches involving their sides until the middle of December.

A ban on away supporters attending matches in France has been extended until mid-December after a ruling from the Interior Ministry.

Terrorist attacks in Paris – one of which took place outside the Stade de France where France were playing Germany – killed 130 people on November 13.
