Colorado Rapids 2-3 Real Salt Lake

COMMERCE CITY, CO–Leg 1 of the Rocky Mountain Cup went Real Salt Lake’s way as they defeated the Colorado Rapids, 3-2, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Both teams are still currently out of the playoff places, but RSL are just a point adrift of the playoff line with the win while the Rapids remain winless at home (0-3-3).

Pablo Ruiz opened the scoring in the 12th minute after his shot from distance deflected off a Rapids defender and past William Yarbrough. It was their first goal in 381 minutes of league play. It would only nine more minutes for RSL’s second. After the ball pinballed in the area, Danny Musovski pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0.

The Rapids pulled one back as Danny Wilson headed in Conor Ronan’s free kick in the 33rd minute, but RSL restored its two-goal advantage a minute before halftime as a criminally unmarked Damir Kreilach took the feed from Rubio Rubin and made it 3-1.

The Rapids made it 3-2 in the 74th minute as Lalas Abubakar headed in another goal, but that was as close as they got as RSL held on for the three points.
