Houston Dash lost against the NWSL newcomer San Diego Wave, 1-0, in their first match of the 2022 NWSL season.

Both teams did not look good in the pre-season Challenge Cup. Houston ended with only six points and were last place in Group C. On the other hand, the Wave was third place in Group B after getting only five points.

Also, the Orange came to this match after several internal problems, especially the suspension of coach James Clarkson, who is facing an investigation about complaints of discrimination, harassment and abuse, after findings by NWSLPA and the NWSL itself.

The match was a closed one. Both teams created more chances, but the home team looked aggressive and with the clear desire of getting the win.

Maria Sanchez, Nichelle Prince, and Rachel Daly were the most dangerous players in attack fot the Dash.  Marisa Viggiano and Sophie Schmidt controlled the action at midfield, creating a good balance for the team coach by Sarah Lowdon.

On the other hand, San Diego Wave, who are lead by USWNT international Alex Morgan, was making its debut in the NWSL regular season. Getting points away was something they were looking for as this will help them create a positive environment inside the squad and having better team chemistry.

The visitors scored the only goal at the 86th minute when Jodie Taylor put it in the back of the net after a cross by Mia Gyau for a historic win for the new club.

Now, the Houston Dash will face KC Current on May 8th, whereas San Diego will host Gotham FC to make their home debut in league action.
