Inter Miami has confirmed Paul McDonough has stepped down from his position as Chief Operating Officer and Sporting Director.
McDonough has been a key component in Miami’s journey to Major League Soccer, leading the building of its roster, management team and facilities.
Inter made the playoffs in a challenging first season amid the coronavirus pandemic, Diego Alonso’s men finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference before losing in the play-in round.
McDonough joined the club having succeeded in a similar role at Atlanta United, who enjoyed MLS Cup success in only its second season.
The news of McDonough’s departure was confirmed on Wednesday with managing owner Jorge Mas saying: “On behalf of Inter Miami’s ownership group, staff and fans I would like to thank Paul for his invaluable contribution to the expansion of Inter Miami CF over the past two and a half years.
“Under his leadership, Inter Miami has established a solid base to build upon, from the Club’s infrastructure to its elite facilities.
“As the Club’s first hire, Paul will always be a part of Inter Miami. I am grateful to him for the passion and dedication he brought to the organization.”
McDonough himself added: “Working alongside the Mas brothers to build upon the legacy of soccer in South Florida will be one of the highlights of my career.
“I am proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to the next chapter.”
McDonough leaves behind a talented roster, including the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Rodolfo Pizarro, Matias Pellegrini and Blaise Matuidi with Inter hopeful of building on their inaugural campaign next season.
