Inter Miami suffers playoff blow with defeat to Montreal Impact

Inter Miami suffered a potentially costly loss in their bid to reach the playoffs, falling to Montreal Impact on Saturday night.

The exiled home side claimed all three points thanks to Maxi Urruti’s winner 10 minutes from time, Bojan Krkic laying it on a plate for the Argentine.

Bojan had scored the opener in the game, a long-range effort that bounced short of goal and forced a mistake from Miami keeper John McCharthy after just six minutes.

Inter equalised through Brek Shea who scored his second in as many games thanks to a fortunate deflection 33 minutes in.

But despite creating plenty of chances – Gonzalo Higuain hitting the post and Lewis Morgan’s deflected effort palmed away by an in-form James Pantemis – Inter would leave empty-handed, suffering a blow to their play-off hopes while Impact strengthened theirs.

“Unfortunately I think that we made clear errors on the two goals we conceded, especially on the second goal when the match was even,” Miami boss Alonso said after the game.

“It was a match that either team could have won, we were close to converting our second goal. We couldn’t afford to make any mistakes but we did and we ended up losing as a result.

“I didn’t like how the team played in the first 25 minutes but after that the team adjusted and it became a back and forth match, and in the second half either team could have won.”

Miami is next in action against Florida state rivals Orlando City on Saturday evening while Montreal stay in New York to face New York City FC.
