A Woman’s Voice – Where Women Have Their Say About Soccer

In a new feature on Prost Amerika, we will attempt to redress the gender balance in Seattle’s soccer journalistic community. Prost Amerika will search the Pacific Northwest for the best women writers to bring you their views and articles on all things affecting soccer, both here and internationally.

A Woman’s Voice – Introduced by Kara McDermott

Over the last year, the Northwest has shown in big ways what we have known for over thirty years. Seattle is a soccer town. Through the region there are numerous high level soccer teams: Sounders FC of course, Tacoma Tide, and now the Kitsap Pumas; and with them have come advances in coverage of these teams, and others, in local media outlets. Of the wonderful forums that already exist, it is very evident that there are few that heavily feature women writers.

It’s not that they’re not around, but rather the unique angle that an extra X-chromosome affords has not been utilized to the greatest advantage. “A Woman’s Voice” was designed to finally tap into the cache of largely unheard opinions and perspectives on the game that we all love. The recent success of the SPU and Sounders women is just one reminder that the same area that produced Kasey Keller and Chris Eylander also gave us Amy Griffin (Allman) and Hope Solo. Likewise, while there is a particular wealth of good sports writing in the Northwest, one look around the pressbox shows how much more there could be.

Prost Amerika, which was groundbreaking for being a bilingual website focused on Northwest issues and attractions, once again is revolutionary in providing a place for women writers to help advance the growth of media coverage by deepening and diversifying the analysis already taking place. In the spirit of fan enfranchisement that Sounders F.C. has professed in a variety of ways, Prost Amerika is now including the voices of those who have plenty to say about the beautiful game, and want a place to say it.
