Weekend Score - ScoresDerby Liberation Front 99 v 97 Cosa Nostra Donnas(Olympia) A nerve tangling game went to the last jam before our home town team emerged marginally victorious.
Bout 2 - ScoresDerby Liberation Front 140 v 70 SockiT Wenches Dairyland Dolls 116 v 76 Grave Danger
Bout 1 - Match ReportsDerby Liberation Front 108 v 87 Grave Danger MATCH REPORT SockiT Wenches 101 v 86 Throttle Rockets MATCH REPORT First Ever Prost Amerika Rat City Rollerderby League Table1700 eager fans packed into Warren Magnuson Park's Hangar 30 in anticipation of the official start of the 2008 Competitive Rolleryderby season. The opening matches pitted the SockiT Wenches against the Throttle Rockets, and saw Grave Danger open their title defence against the Derby Liberation Front. With fans still queuing outside in the spring sun, the start had to be delayed to accommodate everybody who wanted to get in. SockiT Wenches 101 v 86 Throttle Rockets At 6.12 exactly though, the 2008 Season got underway. And what a lightening start it was with the small and speedy SockiT Wenches gliding effortlessly around the rink. Looking match fit from the first whistle, they took an early lead on the startled Rockets. in number 99, Miss Fortune, they have probably the fastest skater in RCRG and it's fair to say that many in the crowd enjoyed the view of her rear end more than the chasing Rockets' pack. When they rested her, the Wenches' own X-Factor, X-Khan, took over. To add to their triumvirate of small quick skaters, there is Wile E. Peyote whose pacy style is similar. Eventually, the Rockets recovered their focus and began to narrow the gap. In Blonde an' Bitchin, they have one of the most graceful skaters in RCRG and jammers, Valtron 300 and Dee Troit, began to accumulate points to keep it close. At half time, they had kept the gap to 49-46m with some of Prost Amerika's old pals, Betty Ford and Andromeda Sprain featuring. In the second half though, the Wenches managed to stretch and maintain their lead with the mercurial Shovey Chase landing a particularly heavy thump on Valtron. The latter to her credit got up and got on with it. Many of us would be still lying there now. The Rockets sit out the next bout as a guest team comes in. They will be torn between wanting to get back on the rink to put right what went wrong and maybe sorting out a little more in training. As Captain, JoWanna AssKickin' said on the eve of the tournament, they have made some changes in the training routine since last year. All the training you can do is not a substitute for competitive action though and they were unlucky to meet a side who started so quickly. Nonetheless, this was an enjoyable match with something for fans of every aspect of the sport. Anya Heels provided cover in abundance for her small nippy jammers, there was a few of the bumps that always excite the crowd, the match was close and it was played in an excellent spirit.

Meet the Girls (and boys) of Rat City Rollerderby
![]() Team: Announcer Alter Ego: Cathy Sorbo Age: 46 - half way to 92 Height: 5' 5" Weight: 120 if I'm not retaining water The "Queen Mum" first got into Rollerderby when her husband's friend was dating a roller girl, and a few Christmases ago they went over to her house. The topic of announcer replacement came up and with Cathy's background in stand-up, she thought she would be a good fit with the league. Cathy met with announcer Professor Jake Stratton and SockiT Wenches skater Clobberin' Mame and was inducted into the derby fold. Her first bout was at the Everett Events Center and was quite intimidating, as she knew no derby jargon and was only faintly aware of the rules. It was baptism by fire for sure. Now she is quite comfortable and thoroughly enjoys her time with co-announcers Professor Jake and Randy Pan the Goat Boy. Cathy told us "they have been especially supportive and patient as I have learned the ways of the flat track." Outside of her Roller duties, she does her stand-up act often; as well as emceeing and performing at corporate events and functions. She has also been writing a column for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer over the last 4 years in the Saturday Spin section and self-publishes a column on her website about her favorite sport, Formula One. Her ambition is to one day see a race at the Hockenheimring in Germany and drink delicious lager until she explodes. Ach ja!
What Prost Amerika bets you didn't know about the Queen Mum:
![]() Team: Throttle Rockets Alter Ego: Cristina Mairena Age: 29 Height: 5' 1" Weight: More to love
Andromeda has been a roller girl for four years having had skating has a hobby. With the cutest of smiles, she explains that she likes to hit people legally. However she is adamant that she is the clean law abiding type, insisting "I am the enforcer. I hit clean and hard, but anyone who messes with my girls, they're messing with me." She has an Uncle Mario in Bad Berka, Thuringia in Germany and wants to say a big "Guten Tag" to him through Prost Amerika. When she's not hip-checking her opponents, she fixes espresso machines for Franke, a Swiss company and is a self-employed massage therapist. "I wreck 'em and then I fix 'em" she says, flashing that smile again.
Dirty "Rat Man" Houllahan
A veteran of the roller derby scene, the Dirty Rat Man discovered the sport as a punk rock musician in West Seattle. He was a friend of existing player, Hurricane Lilly, who helped him find a role in this female dominated environment. He describes his role as bringing the energy of the crowd up between plays. "As Rollerderby has become less of a theatrical event and more of a sport, a greater burden has fallen on the support cast to provide the theatrics while the women concentrate on playing." Happily and comfortably, he talks about the effect he has seen rollerderby has had on many young women. "Many of them were in a bad place in their lives and I've seen them gain confidence and self esteem by realizing that they can be more than they were. It's a better kind of feminist movement," he adds, explaining that it is a great change from the militancy and hostility of earlier ones he has seen in his life. He models his character on the hoopla of the managers he used to watch in professional wrestling. "When I was a kid I used to watch Jimmy Hart, Jim Cornette and Bobby "the Brain" Heenan. Their job was to give the crowd someone to shout at, but they got that crowd going. In his real life, he is an office manager at a realty firm. Luckily, he's only responsible for selling the house there not entertaining it.
Team: Derby Liberation Front Alter Ego: Aimee Ettel Age: 34 Height: 5' 6" Weight: 155 Aimee has been a competitive rower for 17 years. Amazingly that's half her life. A relative newbie at rollerderby, this is just her second year. She caught the bug after seeing a bout in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was living at the time. There is no hint of a southern accent though when she speaks of the athletic challenge she saw rollerderby as presenting the Lake Union Crew member. Clearly the DLF saw her potential when they recruited her last year having previously decided they had sufficient players and didn't need anymore. The part of her they took a look at was her biceps and indeed they look like this girl could propel the QE2 if you gave her an oar. Her number 22 is apparently derived from the use of the term guns to describe them, and the corresponding caliber of weapon. But Aimee's game is as much based on speed and positioning as strength, and if you are new to watching rollerderby, we recommend just watching Aimee as she observes the action going on around her. She says that coming to the sport as an existing athlete gave her some advantages as she already knew her body and how far to push it. This helps reduce the risk of injury.. When she's not gracing the rink, Aimee works as an inventory and planning manager for T-Mobile. There is a joke about having more bars in more places in there but no-one here is brave enough to make it.
Team: Throttle Rockets Alter Ego: Kelly Caster Age: 30 Height: 5' 6" Weight: 155 Kelly is a young looking 30 year old hairdresser working at Studio 904. She is a blocker and first took an interest in Rollerderby after her room mate, Jackie Hammer, made the league and told her about it. Jackie adopted Crash and showed her the Rollerderby equivalent of the ropes. (Probably the banks until the advent of the flat track.) She came to the sport as an enthusiastic skater. Happily engaged, she says that her fiancé is very supportive of her rollering, for which she, us and her fellow Rockets are all profoundly grateful.
Team: Throttle Rockets Alter Ego: Krista LaFontaine Age: 37 Height: 5' 4" Weight: 160 Betty is without doubt one of the most inspirational skaters in the pack. Although as a practising Christian, she may give the credit to someone else, it is not far off the mark to say that rollerderby saved her. She takes her number 12 from the twelve step recovery program that saved her from alcohol, and her name "Betty Ford" Galaxy is a tribute to the former First Lady, who set up the Betty Ford clinic. After deciding to ditch the bottle she set out to find a new hobby to replace it. She found rollerderby. That was four years ago. Now an IT professional with Starbucks, she was a barista until she broke her leg in a rollerderby bout and applied to go corporate. Krista being Krista overcame another hurdle and came up triumphant. Whether you share her religious beliefs or not, she is one of the most inspirational people you would want to meet. Don't be fooled by the scary face paint. That's for her opponents. She says she's too cute without it and her rivals aren't scared enough. What she has taken from rollerderby, she gives back in abundance as a coach for juniors aged 6-10, and flag derby for 11-17 year olds. Her influence is recognized across the small but spreading world of rollerderby. A Jet City roller, Rusty Damage, cited her as one of her inspirations in a recent interview. You can read the full interview here. If you want to be profiled on here, please feel free to email the editor. |

2008 SEASON PREVIEWThe Rollerderby season opens with all four of our Rat City teams in action. Bout 1, presented by NWsource.com, pits the Throttle Rockets against the Sockit Wenches, while 2007 Champions, Grave Danger, take on Kitty Kamikaze's Derby Liberation Front. Prost Amerika caught up with Throttle Rockets captain, JoWanna Ass Kickin', who told us:
"THIS SEASON IS DIFFERENT"
![]() JoWanna Ass Kickin' - Standing Tall This Season Photo Richard Williams "We may not be the team with the most fans but we are certainly the best dressed team on the league. Some call us the party team, but we just know how to have a good time and throw one hell of a party. We are the most attractive team, especially after picking up the last batch of fresh meat. We're going to show Seattle how this good looking, best dressed team will kick everyone's ass and still have time to plan a kick ass party." Maybe your rivals aren't looking forward to the on field attitude, but Prost Amerika is sure looking forward to the party. Good luck to you and your club this year! |

The Prost Amerika "Rollerderby 101"What is Roller Derby and how is it played? Roller derby is full-contact, competitive roller skating on four-wheeled skates around an oval track (in this case it's a flat track) in a counter clockwise direction. Each game, (called a 'BOUT') consists of two 30-minute-long periods, which are divided into two-minute-long jams. Jams consist of up to five women on the track from each team. Each team gets one pivot, one jammer and three blockers on the track.
Who are the Rat City Rollergirls?
The league is comprised of about 80+ member/owners and includes five teams (DLF, Throttle Rockets, Grave Danger, Socket Wenches and the Travel Team). These teams participate in competitive roller derby bouts on a flat track in an amateur athletic season that lasts from February through October. What and Where is Rat City? The Rat City Rollergirls proudly began their league in White Center, a neighborhood south of the Seattle city limits nicknamed "Rat City." Until recently, the Rat City Rollergirls practiced at the beloved Southgate Roller Rink there. There are a couple theories as to how "Rat City" got it's name. Some people assume there was once a prolific rat problem in the 1940's, but RAT might have also been an acronym for Restricted Alcohol Territory, which was a term from the WWII era when Seattle was a Restricted Alcohol Territory, and non-incorporated White Center had liquor laws that were more lenient and it attracted a lot of servicemen. Some think the servicemen nicknamed White Center RAT City. Although, theoretically it should have been called it "un-RAT City," as, if you follow that logic, then Rat City was actually Seattle. Other folks remember when there was a military Relocation and Training (RAT) Center within the neighborhood of White Center during WWII. Urban legend has it that the very popular Southgate Roller Rink in the neighborhood was home to the "Rink Rats". Maybe this is real or a tall "tail"? Well, nonetheless, they thought it was an interesting topic and a cool name for a roller derby league, so it stuck! |

THE RULES THE RULES!There are five skaters from each team on the rink at any one time. Threee of them are blockers. There is one jammer and one pivot. - Pivots are the skaters in the front of the pack with the striped helmets that set the pace and often call the plays for the team. The pivot is the last line of defense to prevent an opposing jammer from scoring. - Blockers work to keep the pack in a tight formation to try and prevent a jammer from the opposing team from skating past them. Pivots, Blockers and Jammers can knock into one another using their bodies, but can't grab onto each other. - Jammers are the skaters positioned at the back of the pack with the starred helmets. The jammers work their way through the pack and score points by passing members of the opposing team after they have lapped the pack once. The jam starts when the referee blows a single whistle. All blockers and pivots on the floor begin to roll forward after the first whistle. The referee then blows a double whistle. When the referee blows the second blast of the double whistle, the jammers begin fighting their way through the pack in an attempt to be named "lead jammer." The first jammer to get through the pack without committing a penalty is the lead jammer. It is possible to have no lead jammer. Each successive time the jammer laps the pack after their first pass through, they receive one point for each member of the opposing team that they pass. A jam lasts a maximum of two minutes, but the "lead jammer" has the right to stop or call off the jam at her discretion. Why would she do this? If the lead jammer falls behind and can't score points, she can call off the jam to prevent the other jammer from scoring point in the jam. Rust Riot2 February 2008, Hangar 30. Rust Riot NW Roller Derby Tournament Review In a tournament sponsored by the Seattle Fire Department, eight teams from around the Northwest United States converged on a sold-out Hangar 30 in North Seattle for a day long marathon of rollerderby. Some of the clubs competing were relatively new, and the Treasure Valley Rollergirls from Boise, Idaho, had come quite a long way to be there. Some of the clubs were newer than others and for them, this was a great learning experience. The hometown Rat City Rollergirls started as clear favorites but will not forget in a hurry their semi final against rivals from Olympia, Oly Rollers, who impressed everyone watching with their speed and skill. Many attending expressed a desire to invite them back as soon as possible. Even after losing their semi final to the home side, the thanks and congratulations they received from the native Seattleites was obvious. The other pleasant surprise was the emergence of a budding rivalry between Portland and Seattle to match those already existing in soccer and basketball. The Rose City Rollers from Portland were the final opponents of the home team and ran them to within 6 points of victory having become unofficial champions of Oregon following their semi-final victory over Lava City from Bend, Oregon. Teams Participating:

The Seattle Rollerderby season is going to consist of five bouts. The first one will pit our four local teams against one another. After that, each side will miss one and a guest team will take their place.
On each night their will be two matches. But after that, the results would go to sporting heaven and be forgotten. Not any more. Prost Amerika intends to keep the results of each match and enter them into the Prost Amerika League Table. So every point from every result is now going to count for something.
At the end of the season, we will have a League Champion, and a second, third, fourth and fifth. The winner will be the team with the highest percentage of wins from their games. Teams will then have bragging rights for a season until we start all over again in 2009.
This is what happens in a sport and rollerderby is a sport. Sports have results. So now like every other sport be it NFL, NHL or MLB, Rollerderby will have a league table. And a Champion.
So beginning with the March 22nd fixtures, we will be keeping track of the team's progress throughout the season.
Let the games begin!
