Lutz Pfannenstiel spricht mit Prost AmerikaWenige Fussballspieler sind weiter als Lutz Pfannenstiel gereist. Den am 12. Mai 1973 Geborenen haben seine Jahre als Spieler in unglaubliche 14 Länder gebracht. Er wohnt jetzt mit seiner Frau und Familie in Vancouver. Prost Amerika hat ihm Fragen über Leben, Beruf, Vancouver und Fussball in Nordamerika gestellt. Der ehemalige Torwart der deutschen U17-Nationalmannschaft schlug mit 18 Jahren ein Angebot von Bayern München aus, bei den Amateuren im Tor zu stehen, und ging stattdessen als Torwart nach Malaysia. Im Winter ist es perfekt zum Skifahren und im Sommer ideal zum Wandern. Zwiesel war für mich eine traumhafte Stadt um aufzuwachsen. Sehr friedlich und verträumt... Meine Eltern wohnen immer noch in Zwiesel und so ca. 1-2 mal pro Jahr komme ich auf Heimaturlaub. Prost Amerika: Du hast in vielen Ländern gespielt. Welches hat dir am besten gefallen? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Norwegen ist mein aboluter Favorit. Land und Leute sind einzigartig. Kanada und Neuseeland sind allerdings auch klasse. Prost Amerika: Du warst ein Spieler/Trainer in Dunedin, Neuseeland. Wie hast du das gefunden? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Die Position Spieler-Trainer war für mich ideal und machte Riesenspass in Dunedin. Ende 2006 bis April 2007 hatte ich die gleiche Position bei einer guten Mannschaft in Armenien (ehemals UdSSR) bei Bentonit FC. Wir hatten Riesenerfolg bevor der Club pleite ging. Allerdings war es eine Supererfahrung und ich denke ich werde auch in der Zukunft als Trainer arbeiten. Prost Amerika: Du hast mit zweimal Euromeister Nottingham Forest gespielt. Setzen solche Erfolge den nachfolgenden Spielern Druck? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Mit Sichereit ist der Druck bei einem Club zu spielen der in der Vergangenheit europäische Spitzenklasse war, enorm gross, weil viele der alten Fans noch an die Vergangenheit gewöhnt sind. Aber man wird gut bezahlt und darum muss man lernen mit Druck umzugehen. Prost Amerika: Mit anderen Ligen verglichen, wie gut ist das USL? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Der Standard in der USL ist eigentlich ganz gut. Ich dachte allerdings dass es seit meiner Zeit in Calgary (2004) aufwärts ging. Meiner Meinung nach hat sich vom Level nicht vieles geändert. Hauptgrund dafür ist die relativ kurze Saison. Wenn Spieler und Trainer nur 6 Monate pro Jahr aktiv sind und die restlichen 6 Monate andere Sachen machen dann kann sich auf Dauer das Niveau nicht verbessern. Auf Dauer muss sich das ändern und an den Rest der Welt angeglichen werden. Prost Amerika: In 2002 spieltest du für Bradford Park Avenue in Harrogate als du schwer verletzt wurdest. Was errinerst dich an den Zusammenprall? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Ehrlich gesagt gar nichts. Ich erinnere mich an den Zusammenprall und dass ich versuchte aufzustehen, dann weiss ich gar nichts mehr bis zum aufwachen im Krankenhaus. Während dieser Gedächtnislücke war ich ja 3mal tot wurde aber wiederbelebt. Ich hatte Glück im Unglück. Einerseits war es gut das ich nichts mehr weiss weil ich dadurch auch nie Angst während meinen nächsten Spielen hatte. Aber sowas vergisst man freilich nie... Ich fühlte eine Art "Afterdeath experience", aber das wird in meinem Buch beschrieben werden... Prost Amerika: Gibt es Whitecaps Spieler die deiner Meinung nach in MLS oder Europäischen Ligen spielen könnten? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Whitecaps haben eine sehr talentierte Mannschaft und ich denke schon dass Spieler wie Adrian Cann, Alen Marcina und auch einige der jungen Leute wie Martin und Kambere ein gute Zukunft haben. Joey Gjertsen ist für mich ein Supertalent und einer der besten US-Spieler überhaupt. Er wird sich in Europa in den Vordergrundspielen wird. Testo hat die Klasse überall spielen zu können. Prost Amerika: Hast du du viel von der Stadt Vancouver gesehen? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Vancouver ist eine tolle Stadt und natürlich habe ich versucht so viel wie möglich mit meiner Familie zu unternehmen....allerdings regnet es ein bischen zuviel. Prost Amerika: Was machst du während der Freizeit? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Fussball ist mein Leben und die meiste Zeit verbringe ich mit Sachen die mit Fussball verbunden sind. Aber ich bin ein Familienmensch und reise sehr gerne. Prost Amerika: Was hält die Zukunft für Lutz Pfannenstiel? Lutz Pfannenstiel: 2008 werde ich wohl in Südamerika spielen und damit der einzige Spieler sein der auf allen (Fussballkontinenten) Profi war. Ich denke dieser Rekord wird niemals gebrochen werde, weil es gibt nicht viele Verückte wie mich. Auf längere Sicht werde ich wohl als Trainer oder FIFA Agent arbeiten. |

Lutz Pfannenstiel: Zwiesel is a wonderful tourist resort in the heart of the Bavarian forest. It's perfect for skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. Growing up in Zwiesel was like a dream for me. Very peaceful and idyllic... My parents still live in Zwiesel and so I go back there once or twice a year on vacation. Prost Amerika: You've played in many countries, which was your favourite? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Norway is my absolute favorite. The country and the people are unique. Mind you, Canada and New Zealand are also excellent. Prost Amerika: You were a player/manager in Dunedin, how did you enjoy management? Lutz Pfannenstiel: The player manager role was ideal for me and I loved doing it in Dunedin. From the end of 2006 to April 2007 I held the same position in Armenia (former USSR) with Bentonit FC who were a good side. We were very succesful until the club went broke. Anyway, it was a great experience and I'll work as a coach again in the future. Prost Amerika: Do the past successes of a club such as Nottingham Forest put extra pressure on the players that follow? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Of course, there is pressure playing for a club who were European Champions in the past, enormous pressure because many of the older fans are used to past success. But I was well paid for it and besides you have to learn to live with pressure.

I thought though that it would have improved since my time in Calgary (2004) but it doesn't seem to have changed all that much from that level. I think the main reason is the relatively short season. If players and coaches are only active six months a year and do something else for the other six months, then the standard will never improve. In the end, we've got to change that and bring it into line with the rest of the world. Prost Amerika: In 2002 while playing for Bradford Park Avenue, you suffered a terrible injury at Harrogate, what do you remember about the incident? Lutz Pfannenstiel: To be honest, not a great deal. I remember the collision and that I tried to stand up, then I know absolutely nothing else until I woke up in hospital. While I was unconscious, I actually died three times and had to be brought back to life. Every cloud has a silver lining however. On the one hand, it was good that I couldn't remember anything because I wasn't playing the following games in total fear because of it. But one doesn't forget such a thing so easily... I felt a kind of 'Afterdeath Experience', but you'll be able to read all about that in my book! Prost Amerika: Are there any Whitecaps players you think could make it in the MLS or European football? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Whitecaps have a very talented side and I think that players like Adrian Cann, Alen Marcina and even some of the younger players like Martin and Kambere have a bright future. Joey Gjertsen is for me a great talent and one of the best US players anywhere. He'll make headlines in Europe. Testo has the quality to play anywhere. Prost Amerika: Do you get to see much of Vancouver when not playing? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Vancouver is a great city and naturally I've tried to see as much as I can with my family. Rains a bit too much though! Prost Amerika: What do you do away from football? Lutz Pfannenstiel: Football is my life and most of my time is taken up with football related activities. But I'm also a family man and I love to travel. Prost Amerika: What does the future hold for Lutz Pfannenstiel? Lutz Pfannenstiel: In 2008, I'll be playing in South America and in doing so, I'll become the only player ever to play professional football on every continent. I don't think anyone will ever break this record because there aren't many people as crazy as me. In the long term, I'd like to work as a coach or FIFA agent.
