Not that you need Prost Amerika to tell you, but the Olympics are coming. And with the Winter Games come thousands of winter sports enthusiasts to attend the games. However, all research from tourist authorities including Utah and Salt Lake City find that the attention brought to an area by the presence of the Olympics lasts well beyond the year of the games, and starts well before.

Nothing says ‘come and see us’ like saying it in your own language. The answer is simple -- say it in German and say it to the Germans. A European Awareness Study by Travel Utah (p14) measured interest in the Winter Olympics in various European markets using hours of Winter Olympics watched on TV as a barometer. They found that the Germans watched four times as much Olympics coverage as the Italians and British, and more than twice as much as the French. In addition, this measurement did not include the winter sports bastions of alpine countries Switzerland and Austria. Interest in these games from the German-speaking world is immense. People are starting to look at British Columbia and Washington State more than ever before as tourist destinations. And they’re doing it now.

IS THE WEB IMPORTANT?

It is for the German-speaking market. In the wake of the Salt Lake City Olympics, the Utah Government surveyed the impact tourism had made on their economy. The International Consumer Analysis Survey (p3) concluded that German-speaking tourists (including Austrians and Swiss) had a high proportion of Free Independent Travelers (FITs). FITs are people who plan their own trip, travel independently and avoid group excursions and travel agents. Undoubtedly, the web is their main tool of research for information. A second conclusion the research came to echoed the findings of the European Awareness Study - German speakers had a strong interest in the Olympic Games.
