Former Bayern Munich superstar and current Chicago Fire midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will get a tribute match at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, August 28th, with the Fire playing Bayern Munich. Schweinsteiger will play one half for each club.
“I especially want to thank Bayern Munich, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß, as well as Andrew Hauptman and Nelson Rodríguez from the Chicago Fire for making the match possible,” said Schweinsteiger.
“It is a great honor to have been invited to participate in a match with a legendary club such as Bayern Munich and in honoring one of the game’s great champions and sportsmen,” said Fire general manager Nelson Rodríguez. “Bastian is deserving of this recognition and we are grateful to both him and Bayern for including Chicago Fire SC.”
Schweinsteiger played 13 seasons for Bayern from 2002 to 2015 where he won eight Bundesliga titles, seven German Cups, and a European Cup in 2013. After an ill-fated spell to Manchester United, Schweinsteiger joined the Fire and scored on his debut on April 1st, 2017, against Montreal. Schweinsteiger would make 26 appearances in all competitions for the Fire in 2017 scoring three goals and six assists.
The Fire will be three days removed from an August 25th match against Columbus, but will not have another competitive match until September 16th when it hosts Orlando.
