Saturday night’s 3-3 thriller between the Seattle Sounders and New England Revolution was a statistician’s dream. With the Revs leading by a comfortable margin for much of the match, Jay Heaps’ side had little incentive to come out of their shell. The set-up led to some wild and lopsided numbers from one of the season’s most interesting games so far. Here are the most remarkable stats the match tossed up, along with a couple extra for context:

– # of times Sounders have come back from 3-0 deficit, dating to 1974

2 – # of consecutive starts for Will Bruin after not starting any of Seattle’s first 6 matches to start the season

– A.) # of times Sounders hit the woodwork on the night B.) # of starting Seattle field players who successfully passed at a rate of at least 90% C.) # of starting New England field players who successfully passed at a rate of at least 80%

Will Bruin made a second-consecutive start for Seattle on Saturday

– A.) # of Seattle field players with at least 100 touches B.) # of times DC United and LA Galaxy have struck the woodwork this season tied for second-most in the league

– Revs matches in Seattle since the visitors took home a win, dating to their 1-0 victory in their first trip to CenturyLink Field on August 20, 2009

– # of Revs open play crosses

– Total # of saves between Stefan Frei and Cody Cropper, who allowed 6 goals between the two of them

– # of starting New England field players with fewer than 50 touches

10 – # of times Seattle have hit the woodwork in 2017, 2.5 times more than the second-most in the league

13 – A.) Total # of shots New England took, a tidy haul on 25.6% possession B.) # of minutes between a 3-0 Revs lead and a 3-3 tie (75th min. – 88th min.)

26 – Total # of Seattle shots, split evenly between the halves

36 – # of Seattle open play crosses, 22 of which came in the second half

74.4 – % of match Sounders possessed the ball, a season-high

89.2 – Sounders team passing % on the night

96.8 – Joevin Jones’ passing % on 95 attempts, a game-high

104 – Total passes for Cristian Roldan, a game-high

Cristian Roldan helped lead the way in a statistically dominant Seattle passing performance

133 – Total touches for Joevin Jones, a game-high

253 – # of Sounders passes in final third

256 – # of total Revs passes

742 – # of total Sounders passes, a season-high

It might just be the most statistically curious MLS match of the year! Check these numbers out one more time, because you probably won’t see anything like them again for a while.
