Philly v.s Columbus: Match Preview

The Philadelphia Union travel to Columbus Wednesday to take on the Crew for the third and final time this year at 7:30 EST. The Union are going for the league triple against the Crew, having won the previous two meetings. The first time these two teams met, the Union squeezed out a 2-1 victory in Columbus. It was the Union’s only road victory until two weeks ago when the Union beat The New England Revolution. In Philadelphia, the Union won 3-2. In both games the Union had a 2 goal cushion to hold, and conceded a late goal to make the game seem much closer than it really was.

The former Eastern Conference champions, while not performing at their expected level, are still a dangerous team. With a 4-8-11 record, Columbus will be desperate to get a win on it’s home turf. Ola Kamara has notched 10 goals in 17 games, proving himself a viable replacement for Kei Kamara. The Crew are fresh off a 2-0 win in New England, where Ethan Finlay and Federico Higuain were able to find the back of the net. Both players possess incredible talent, and will have to step up their game if they want to get a result against the 4th place Union.

Meanwhile the Union are coming off it’s 2nd straight home loss after winning it’s 2nd road victory in New England. Toronto FC came in and bossed the first half, taking a 3-1 lead. In the second half the Union came out stronger, but it was too late, and Toronto defended well, making life hard for the Union. Even though Philly got a few good chances, they were unable to find the net as the game ended 3-1. The Union will need to bounce back if they want to get a home berth going into the playoffs, though a losing streak could see the Union lose more than just a home game.
