Any thoughts that Fourth-tier FC Carl Zeiss Jena could pull off a giant-killing were extinguished in three minutes. A cross from Franck Ribery and setup from Thomas Muller gave Robert Lewandowski his first of what would be a hat trick in Bayern’s 5-0 win over the Regionalliga Nordost side. Raphael Koczor’s net was under assault all night, and did make several great saves, but an error by Justin Gerland in the 34th minute allowed Lewandowski to beat Koczor for goal #2.

Jena’s defense was a bit too pedestrian against the runner Lewandowski. He was left unmarked in the 43rd minute as four players watched Ribery and the former completed his hat trick from 18 yards out. Lewandowksi turned provider in the 72nd minute passing off to Arturo Vidal for a tap in to make it 4-0. Five minutes later, Mats Hummels scored his first goal for Bayern as headed in Joshua Kimmich’s corner.

All too easy for Bayern as they advance to the Second Round of the DFB Pokal. They begin title defense in the Bundesliga on Friday against Werden Bremen at 1:30pm Central time on FS1.
