For the first time since taking over as the Interim Head Coach of the Houston Dynamo, Wade Barrett faced off against Dominic Kinnear. As the student met the teacher, it seemed as if two teams who where replicas of one another faced off and the 1-1 tie couldn’t have been more appropriate result.
The majority of the first half was uneventful. Both teams traded scoring opportunities but couldn’t finish them.
That is until Brazilian midfielder Alex Lima, who had been yellow carded earlier in the first half and will miss the next match at Montreal, overpowered opposing midfielder Fatai Alashe to get in the box, opened his body and scored the first goal of the night in the 45+3 minute of the match with a curling left-footed shot.
The Dynamo would head into halftime with a one goal lead.
Both teams began the second half with attacking mentalities but it would be San Jose who came away with the only goal of the second half.
The tying goal was scored in the 59th minute after San Jose retrieved the ball headed out by Houston on a corner kick. Cordell Cato was the assist man, placing the ball near the second post as forward Chris Wondolowski slipped in-between defenders Sheanon Williams and Jalil Anibaba to one-touch it into the back of the net.
The goal was Wondolowski’s first against his former club. ‘Wondo’ now has scored against every Major League Soccer club he’s faced.
The Dynamo pressed in the final minutes but could not find victory at home and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Houston Dynamo will travel to Montreal on Thursday and ahead of their match with the Impact on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT). San Jose returns home where they will face New York City FC in a nationally-televised match on Friday night (10:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. PT).
Teacher meets pupil

Houston Dynamo Interim Head Coach Wade Barrett played as a defender for the San Jose Earthquakes from 1998-2002 and in 2005 before the Quakes moved to Houston and re-branded as the Dynamo. Barrett finished his career with Houston after the conclusion of the 2009 season.
After Kinnear retired as a player he took an assistant coach job (2001-2003) under then Earthquakes Head Coach Frank Yallop before succeeding him at the start of the 2004 season. Under the tutelage of Kinnear, Barrett won the 2005 MLS Supoorters’ Shield with San Jose and captained the Houston Dynamo to the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup titles.
Barrett entered the coaching ranks as an assistant under Kinnear upon retiring in 2010, when Kinnear was the Dynamo’s head coach. When Kinnear left for San Jose in 2012, Barrett stayed on as an assistant in Houston under Owen Coyle.
After Coyle’s departure in late May, Barrett has taken over leadership of the Dynamo in the technical area. Barrett was officially named the interim on June 7, 2016, before then that all three Dynamo assistants shared responsibility with Barrett taking the lead.
“There’s a lot of stuff swirling around right now, but it’s good to see Dom as a friendly face,” said Barrett about coaching against Kinnear. “He is a real competitor so as soon as the game starts the attention turns to taking care of business. I’ve traded some texts with him over the weeks and it’s just good to see him. I’ve had a lot of good years under Dominic as a player and as a coach and I’ll always appreciate the things he did for me. So it’s nice to see him.”
“I think it’s great,” said San Jose Eartquakes Head Coach Dominic Kinnear about Barrett’s head coaching opportunity. “I’m all for Americans getting the head coaching jobs in this league. I think it’s productive in the short term and very productive in the long term, so Wade I know has definitely put in his years, he was a wonderful player and a great servant to the [Dynamo], and I think to see him get this chance is a positive, and I sincerely wish him good luck and hope he does well.”
