Hinton Unleashed: Sigi Schmid deserves vote of confidence

Prost Amerika video columnist Alan Hinton reviewed the Sounders’ season as the Rave Green approach the All-Star break.

Hinton commented in the video below on Seattle’s scoring problems, and recommended that management retain head coach Sigi Schmid.

Sounders FC mid-season review

“It gets down to goals. We’ve scored 14 goals, which is by far the lowest in the whole of the league…And, it’s not good enough.”

The former Derby County crossing legend noted Seattle’s problems weren’t on defense, where they’ve given up 21 tallies in 17 games, or third-best in the Western Conference. The Sounders’ tepid attack has scored a mere 14 goals, last in MLS.

Striker Obafemi Martins’ departure right before the start of the season left a large gap on offense. Rookie Jordan Morris leads the team with six strikes, while his high-profile teammate Clint Dempsey has notched only two in 10 matches.

According to Hinton, the old adage of defense winning games does not apply in the Sounders’ case.

Should the Sounders fire Sigi Schmid?

“He’s a very good coach…He’s extremely upset because he thinks the team have been giving their best…I think Sigi should be given a vote of confidence.”

Hinton attends Seattle practices on a regular basis. He hasn’t observed any negative rumblings from players about their embattled head coach.

When asked what management should do, he said the team should not make a decision until the end of the 2016 campaign. He also predicted the Sounders would fight their way back into the playoffs.
