Hinton Unleashed: ‘Happy’ van Gaal was sacked

Prost Amerika video columnist Alan Hinton talked about his recent clean bill of health in this week’s Hinton Unleashed.

In the video below, he discussed Seattle Sounders’ scoring problems, Louis van Gaal’s firing at Manchester United, Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the final, and Jurgen Klinsmann’s 23-man Copa America squad.

“The results are negative, and I am cancer free…I’m the happiest man in town.”

Hinton spoke openly about his bladder cancer diagnosis several years ago and subsequent treatment. This past Monday he received the all-clear from his doctor, and urged his followers to get screened for cancer.

Sounders’ scoring problems

“The penalties are being given left-right-and-center in Major League Soccer. Sounders don’t have any penalty kicks yet this year. One of the reasons is that we’re not going into the box.”

The Sounders were held scoreless for the second straight game in their 1-0 loss to Western Conference leaders Colorado Rapids last Saturday night. Seattle’s scored 10 goals in 11 matches. They sit one slot above last place in the West with 13 points.

According to Hinton, striker Obafemi Martins’ departure right before the start of the MLS campaign is the primary reason for Seattle’s offensive woes. The lack of presence and players in the 18-yard-box results in fewer scoring opportunities.

Man U sacks Louis van Gaal

“They treated him very badly. Am I happy he’s gone? I am because he doesn’t play the right kind of soccer that Manchester United fans and the rest of their world followers deserve, and Mourinho will be in there.”

Despite winning the FA Cup on May 21, Manchester United decided to sack manager Louis van Gaal. Former Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho is expected any day to sign a contract to manage the Red Devils.

Hinton attended van Gaal’s training sessions while Man U was in Seattle for their 2016 pre-season U.S. tour. He noted the Dutchman’s autocratic management style and “boring” soccer could lead to a short stay. Van Gaal managed to finish the season but was fired two days later after winning the FA Cup.

USMNT’s Copa America squad

“He [head coach Jurgen Klinsmann] seems to have gone for safety. He’s gone for experience…”

The former First Division winger and English national was perplexed by USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s decisions in naming his 23-man Copa America team.

Hinton noted the inclusion of veterans Chris Wondolowski, Jermaine Jones, Clint Dempsey, Geoff Cameron, Brad Guzan and Tim Howard. He wondered if Klinsmann’s desire to craft a younger national team was trumped by a desire to field a safer/winning team.
