MLS has announced that Portland Timbers head coach, Caleb Porter, is MLS Coach of the Year.

He finished ahead of Mike Petke (NY), Jason Kreis (RSL) and Oscar Pareja (COL). He tied Petke on votes from within the clubs, but led the media poll heavily.

Cancer survivor Kevin Alston of the New England Revs won the 2013 Comeback Player of the Year award.

2013 Coach of the Year: Caleb Porter – Portland Timbers

In his first MLS season as a professional coach, Caleb Porter led the Timbers to a 14-5-15 record and the number one seed in the Western Conference. The club’s five losses tied the MLS record for fewest losses in a 34-game regular season. Porter guided the Timbers to a 15-game unbeaten streak this season – the longest by a first-year head coach in MLS – and 23-point turnaround from the 2012 season.

Among first-year MLS coaches all-time, Porter ranks first in shutouts (15), second in points (57) and fourth in winning percentage (.632). Under Porter’s guidance, the Timbers registered an MLS-record, 43-goal turnaround in goal differential compared to the 2012 season while posting a season-high, plus-21 goal differential in 2013

The award was voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular season performance. The other two finalists were New York Red Bulls’ Mike Petke and Real Salt Lake’s Jason Kreis. Below is a breakdown of the voting for the top four candidates:

Coach (Club) % of Club Votes % of Media Votes % of Player Votes Weighted Total
Caleb Porter (POR)

Mike Petke (NY)

Jason Kreis (RSL)

Oscar Pareja (COL)

  1. Congratulations on a decisive and deserved selection as Coach of the Year. Porter was first in the media, first among the players, and joint first among the owners.
