Dempsey Coming Home after Calf Strain in Glasgow

Clint Dempsey and Fabian Johnson are out of the USA two friendlies with Scotland and Austria.

A US Soccer press release out this morning relayed the bad news. No replacements are being sent out.

Dempsey suffered a right calf strain during training Wednesday morning in Glasgow. Fabian Johnson is still bothered by a persistent right ankle injury and will return to Hoffenheim for further evaluation according to the release.

U.S. Men’s National Team forward Clint Dempsey and midfielder Fabian Johnson have been sidelined by injury and forced to withdraw from the U.S. roster for the upcoming friendlies against Scotland and Austria. No replacements will be added to the squad.

The U.S. first faces Scotland on Nov. 15 at Hampden Park in Glasgow (3 p.m. ET, ESPN2 and UniMas) then, four days later, will play Austria for the first time since 1998 when they meet at Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna (2:45 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network and UniMas). The United States is concluding a tremendous year, highlighted by reaching the World Cup final competition for the seventh-consecutive time. The USA finished in first place in qualifying in the CONCACAF region for the third straight time and collected a perfect 5-0-0 record at home in the final round, with all wins coming by shutout. Including a team-record 12-game winning streak, the U.S. has won 16 games in 2013, already a team high for a calendar year.

  1. Ouch, but I don’t think it will have much of an impact on Selection for Brazil !!!!

  2. This will affect the potential loan for Dempsey more than it will impact Brazil.
