Litany of EPL stars should lift some of the gloom

The Premier League is a diverse league with players from all over the world.  One country whose players don’t get a lot of attention is the United States.  While America’s “soccer” programs are ever developing, there are several players from the states that play in the Premier League.  Let’s take a look at a few.

Clint Dempsey has been an EPL success story

Clint Dempsey has been an EPL success story

One of the most successful Americans in the Premier League is Tottenham Hotspur forward Clint Dempsey.  He played with Fulham from 2007 through the end of last season and is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 50 goals in 184 appearances.  He joined Spurs in August and has appeared in 18 games so far with 5 goals.

Stoke City right back Geoff Cameron joined the team just this year after having successful careers at the amateur level and in the MLS with the Houston Dynamo.  He has continued his success at Stoke City and has become one of the best defenders in the league.  He is in the top five for both tackles and interceptions and has impressed many during his 21 games thus far.

Currently there are strong indications that Dallas midfielder Brek Shea may be about to join him.

After several successful years in Major League Soccer, Brad Guzan was transferred to Aston Villa in July of 2008.  Guzan has primarily played in a backup role for the team up until this season.  This year, Guzan has appears in 21 games and has 72 saves and five clean sheets in a struggling Villa side.

With him at Aston Villa is Eric Lichaj.  The defender joined Aston Villa in 2008 and saw somewhat limited playing time on the main squad up until this year.  He did however have several successful loan stints with Lincoln City, Leyton Orient, and Leeds United.  This year Lichaj has seen more playing time, appearing in 15 games with one assist.

Guzan and Lichaj are two rising players on Aston Villa and many hope they can help turn around a struggling club that according to the Birmingham Post recently reported a huge loss of almost $80m.  A recent deal has however brightened at least their financial outlook with a new sponsor also with an American background Genting Casinos.  Genting also plays a major role in some US states as they have casino operations in New York and Miami, FL.  The team is hoping that improve performance on the field and strong financial backing will help the team turn things around.

After last night’s dour draw with Canada, American soccer could do with a short term lift and a modicum of success from the players listed above will give more American footballers the confidence to reach out beyond the MLS and try their craft abroad.
