The NWSL announced the draft order for their college draft.

A press release says:

The draft order was determined with assistance from a panel of experts and agreed upon by all eight clubs.

The panel ranked the strength of each club based on their allocated players, and conducted a weighted draw.

If ever confirmation was needed that the Portland Thorns came out tops in the NWSL allocation lottery, it came today.

The panel decided that the clubs would select in this order:

1. Chicago Red Stars
2. Washington Spirit
3. FC Kansas City
4. Sky Blue FC (New York/New Jersey)
5. Boston Breakers
6. Western New York Flash
7. Seattle Reign FC
8. Portland Thorns FC

Their judgment matches that of many observers that the Thorns who drew Alex Morgan, Christine Sinclair, Rachel Buehler and Tobin Heath came out of the day a clear winner.

Seattle Reign, who will select second last, received Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe and Amy Rodriguez.

Despite receiving just six players to all others’ seven, the Western New York Flash were deemed to have come out third best after drawing Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach and Veronica Perez among others.

The draft will consist of four rounds with each team receiving three minutes to make a selection in the first two rounds, and five minutes to make a selection in the final two rounds. After the first round is completed the order will remain the same for the following three rounds, with Chicago selecting first to start each round.

  1. I didn’t look at the other 5 teams, but this is the exact bottom three, in order, that I would have expected of a fair draft order.
