The excellent Chicago site, Windy City Soccer, has entered the discussion about Major League Soccer’s trademarking of the rivalry Cups.
In the article entitled “MLS Filing Trademarks on Supporters’ Trophies”, site editor Dan Gaichas writes:
“The league trying to trademark these cups as if they were its own is frankly insulting to the supporters of the clubs and would cause an unnecessary strain in relations.
The league says that it’s doing this with the interests the clubs and their supporters in mind, but it would better if the league consult with the supporters groups first on how to manage this before just filing for trademarks for cups that the league itself did not create.”
