Solo will return to Seattle

Womens soccer fans found out today where the top stars in the North American game will be plying their craft in the new National Womens Soccer League.

The newly formed Seattle Reign have been allocated their share of the best players from the USA, Canada and North America.

They will get some players who starred for the Sounders Women in 2012, most notably US internationals Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe.

Seattle Reign Allocation in full:

Megan Rapinoe (USA)
Amy Rodriguez (USA)
Hope Solo (USA)
Kaylyn Kyle (CAN)
Emily Zurrer (CAN)
Jenny Ruiz (MEX)
Teresa Noyola (MEX)

New Coach Laura Harvey is expected to arrive in February but told us her reaction:

“Really happy with the allocation, a mixture of positions, players with lots of experience. A great start to a exciting time! Look forward to working with these players we now need to focus on building the rest of our squad.”

These are fantastic acquisitions for the club. Hope Solo is the best keeper in the world. She’s proved that over the years. I’ve heard a lot about Megan. I’m really pleased. It’s a pity that we’ll have manage without her for the first weeks of the season.

Ms Harvey was referring to Megan Rapinoe needing to see her time out in France before beginning her Reign career.

Asked if she valued having players who had starred in the Emerald City last season back, she saw a broader picture:

“It’s important to have Seattle players returning. Not entirely to help teach me about Seattle itself, but they know what’s needed and expected to win games. That’s a big part of it.”

Looking south at the Portland Thorns, Laura spoke of her admiration of head coach Cindy Parlow Cone as a player adding:

“I’m sure she’ll be delighted with her selections.”

55 players in total have been allocated among the eight new teams.

      • I managed to speak to Laura after the news broke. I can tell you, she is very excited about coming out here.

  1. Glad about Hope & Megan…. Disappointed about both Alex and Sinclair going to Portland. That is going to be a tough, tough offensive squad.

  2. We are going to have a great midfield and defense (we will likely sign some awesome local defenders). IMO We just really need to sign a few good forwards and we will be a league leader. Go Reign!!
