EPL Weekend Review by David Wittstock
Wolverhampton 2-1 Manchester United: Kevin Doyle scored a 40th minute winner to hand United their first loss of the season and lift Wolves out of last place, once West Ham had lost the next day. Wayne Rooney reverted to early season form after firing a brace mid week as Man U missed out on a new record for unbeaten games.
Man United Lose First League Game
Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool: The Reds scored a famous victory at Stamford Bridge days after selling Fernando Torres for a record $80m to the Blues. Torres was largely ineffective sharing the front line with Drogba and Anelka and was substituted in the 66th minute. Raul Meireles scored the winner in the 69th minute after an unclaimed cross fell to him just outside the six yard box.
West Ham 0-1 Birmingham: Nikola Zigic piled further misery on the Hammers, who look more and more likely to go down. Zigic was waiting at the far post on a set piece from the left providing the lone goal in a game largely contolled by the London side.
Tottenham 2-1 Bolton: Rafa Van Der Vaart made and missed two penalties within a minute and Niko Kranjcar scored in stoppage time to pull Spurs level with Chelsea in fourth place. Chelsea loanee Daniel Sturridge pulled Bolton level in the 55th minute.
Everton 5-3 Blackpool: Louis Saha scored four of eight total goals in a thrilling fixture in Merseyside. Big four target Charlie Adam put Blackpool ahead 3-2 in the 64th minute before Everton and Saha exploded for three more goals in the last twenty minutes.
Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal: Arsenal were left complaining about the officiating on the part of Phil Dowd in a wild four goal comeback against Arsenal. Four goals down, Dowd awarded the Tyneside club two penalties and red carded Abou Diaby for violent conduct for pushing both Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton, of all people. A stunning goal from Ismael Chiek Tiote capped the rally with the fourth goal as the Gunners threw away a four goal lead for the first time in the EPL.
The Most Remarkable Game in English Football History?
Stoke City 3-2 Sunderland: Stoke scored twice in the last ten minutes to pull City up to eighth place. Sunderland took the lead in the 48th through Asamoah Gyan and held that line until Robert Huth scored in the 83rd and 93rd minutes to give Stoke a brilliant victory at the Brittania.
Aston Villa 2-2 Fulham: US international Clint Dempsey saved a point for the Cottagers with his tenth league goal as both clubs continue to loiter just north of the danger zone.

Wigan 4-3 Blackburn: Wigan and Blackburn combined for five second half goals, and Blackburn’s rally fell just short in the last ten minutes.
Manchester City 3 -0 West Brom: The Citizens took advantage of everybody else’s poor result with a very comfortable 3-0 home win. It was so comfortable that the Baggies fired manager Roberto Di Matteo in the after match. No such problem for his compatriot Roberto Mancini, who may be hoping that Champions League commitment drain his rival’s resources in the New Year. City like Newcastle benefited from two penalties but with Matteo gone, there was nobody left at West Brom to do the Arsenal-stlye ‘boo unfair’.
