Benfica Win Portuguese League Cup
Benfica thrashed Porto 3-0 in the League Cup final to claim the first domestic trophy of the season at Faro’s Estádio do Algarve. The Lisbon side took a 10th minute lead through Ruben Amorim whose long speculative drive squirmed past Porto keeper Nuno.
Porto were the better side for most of the first half but their hopes at entering the interval on level terms were dashed seconds before half time when Carlos Martins curled a free kick past the helpless Nuno.
Benfica then dominated a deflated Porto side, and Oscar Cardozo added the third just before the final whistle.
The title is Benfica’s second in just the third season of the fairly new competition. They were victorious over Sporting last season, while Vitória Setúbal won the inaugural competition in 2008.
The North America bound side are on course for a unique treble this season. They lead the League by three points and are still in the Europa League where their next opponents are English side Liverpool.
