Timbers to Face Whitecaps at Starfire
Fresh from their Cascadia derby victory in Seattle, the Portland Timbers are set to face another MLS side this weekend, when they travel south to California. They take on the San Jose Earthquakes in a preseason match Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara at 7 p.m.
Last week, they recorded a 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC in a preseason game at Qwest Field with a Gabriel Obatola goal in the 44th minute settling the matter.

Saturday’s preseason contest will be broadcast live on 95.5 The Game with broadcaster John Strong calling the action; a half-hour pre-game show begins at 6:30 p.m.
Portland wrap up their third week of preseason training with the match against the Earthquakes. The Timbers opened their six-week camp March 1 in preparation for the 2010 USSF Division 2 Pro League season.
Portland and San Jose have met in preseason contests the last two years. In 2008, the Earthquakes earned a 2-1 victory in Portland, and then recorded a 1-0 win at home last year. Since 2001, San Jose have won four and lost one against their northern rivals.
The Earthquakes too are unbeaten in preseason and have not allowed a goal in their last five games, with four wins and a draw. Saturday’s match marks the Earthquakes’ final preseason test before the start of the MLS regular season.
Following Saturday’s match, the Timbers resume preseason training on Monday and will face the Vancouver Whitecaps in a training game on March 26 in Tukwila, Wash.
Portland begin the 2010 campaign Saturday, April 17, as they play host to the Rochester Rhinos at PGE Park at 7 p.m. Vancouver open their season on April 11th when the newly named NSC Minnesota Stars visit. kick off is 4pm.
The two Pacific Northwest sides then have their first meeting of the season on April 29th in Portland.
