Hannover Score Hat-trick of Own Goals
Hannover 96 set an unenviable record during their 5-3 defeat at Kasey Keller’s former club Borussia Mönchengladbach. They may have scored three goals for themselves but they also scored three for their hosts.
Tunisian centre half Karim Haggui scored two in his own net and a third by Ivorian left back Constant Djakpa sealed the unusual hat-trick.
Hannover coach Andreas Bergmann didn’t quite know whether to laugh or cry. “We saw a crazy, curious match. It’s unbelievable we scored six goals and lost. I don’t think we’ll forget this match any time soon.”
Haggui opened the scoring (for the opposition) after 15 minutes, after ‘96 goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz slipped and kicked the ball onto the North African’s foot and it rebounded into the net.
His second came in injury time and sealed ‘Gladbach’s win just minutes after Hannover had crawled their way back to 3-4 down.
Djakpa’s own goal also came from a back pass that surprised Fromlowitz and could not have come at a worse time, with Gladbach leading 2-1 and Hannover pushing for the equaliser. Another African, Ivorian Didier Konan did score twice for Hannover to keep them in with a chance but was sent off for a second bookable offence six minutes from time. Christian Schulz scored Hannover’s other goal.
Both sides remain in the upper half of the lower half of the league table, which Bayer Leverkusen lead by just one point after Friday’s 2-2 draw with Hertha Berlin. Mönchengladbach’s local rivals Schalke 04 sit second after their excellent 0-2 away win at Werder Bremen.
