Portland Pilots Collen Warner

Former Sounders opponent Collen Warner is among the list of 62 MLS invitees from 44 Division I schools who have been invited to participate in the 2010 Adidas MLS Player Combine. The annual player combine will be held at Central Broward Regional Park in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Jan. 8-12, 2010.

Midfielder Collen Warner played for the University of Portland Pilots in that pre season friendly at the Pilots Metro Field in Northern Oregon back on February 20th, the Sounders first ever open door game in the Pacific Northwest. Warner comes from Denver and once trained with the Liverpool Youth Academy in 2002 , and with Italy’s prestigious Serie “A” Club Youth Academy Atalanta in 2005. His major is environmental science.

Bill Irwin is the Director of Soccer at the University of Portland, and he was delighted about the selection. He said, “He’s a pretty complete player who would be a tremendous asset to the MLS.”

Warner: “Playing for the Timbers would Definitely be Exciting”

Warner himself was ecstatic. Speaking exclusively to Prost Amerika, he was excited but humble when addressing the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead of him.

“I’m very excited and it’s a great opportunity for me. I’ve enjoyed all four years at UP and I want to thank the coaching staff for helping to make this possible. It’s kind of sad that my collegiate career is over, but I’m looking forward to the next step.

There will be lot of good players at the combine and there will be some pressure to perform. Everybody will be watching and critiquing, so I definitely want to do my best.”

We asked him if he had any particular fondness for either staying in Portland and representing the city in 2011, or returning to his native Denver.

“It would be cool to play in my hometown for the Rapids. Seattle is a good MLS club and I would love to play there too, but I’ve also grown to love Portland. Playing for the Timbers would definitely be exciting, but I’m just thrilled for this opportunity.”
