Uefa_Champions_League_romaThe UEFA Champions League enters the sixth and final round of matches with the fate of some of Europe’s largest names, and probably their managers, at stake. Groups A-D play on Tuesday and among the names facing Euro-oblivion on Tuesday are Juventus, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Real Madrid.

GROUP A

Juventus still haven’t secured qualification for the next stage. They need to avoid defeat when Bayern Munich visit the Stadio del Appi onTuesday. Bordeaux have secured a surprising first place in what has been generally a much improved campaign for French clubs. If Bayern do win, Juventus will find themselves out of the tournament and sitting in third place in Serie A, and the scourge of Europe having just been fined a second time due to the racist behaviour of their fans. Saturday’s victory over Inter may have saved Ciro Ferrara in the short term, but a European exit may mean his tenure in his first ever club job is short. Bayern sit fourth in the Bundesliga which is not considered good enough, but with just four points between then and the inconsistent leading pack, there would seem to be less chance of an immediate panic in Munich than in Turin.

4 Maccabi Haifa 5 0 0 5 0 7 -7 0

GROUP B
The Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg host Manchester United and need to win, or be left hoping CSKA slip up in Turkey. Head to head records count so Besiktas can only make the third place which will propel them into the Europa Cup. It’s nail biting timing for the German club who won their first ever title last year. Nemanjo Vidic is out for United who may decide that putting too much effort out to finish the group first rather than second would be profligate with Aston Villa to come at the weekend. Wolfsburg are a lowly eighth and couldn’t even beat SC Freiburg at home on Saturday.
Besiktas v CSKA Moscow, Gp B, 11:45
Wolfsburg v Man Utd, Gp B, 11:45

4 Besiktas 5 1 1 3 2 6 -4 4

GROUP C

Marseille are doggedly hanging in there with two of the biggest names in world football. A well deserved draw with Milan means Real Madrid cannot relax when they visit the south coast of France on Tuesday. Marseille do need a three goal win to overtake them while Milan also need to beat Zurich to ensure progression. Should Milan fail to win, they might well find themselves out of the CL embarrassingly early.

4 FC Zurich 5 1 0 4 4 13 -9 3

GROUP D

Chelsea and Porto had both already qualified when the West London Blues visited the Dragao Stadium. Chelsea should be able to return to winning ways after their weekend defeat, and may rest players although Atletico Madrid require them to win to preserve their parachute into the Europa Cup, a consolation prize for third place sides.
