To compound Real’s misery, local rivals Atletico Madrid thrashed UD Marbella who play at the same level as Alcoron, 6-0, a score that had Real been able to match, would have ensured their progress to the next round. Maxi Rodríguez scored four goals himself.
And there’s further reason for Atletico’s fanbase to be smirking at the moment. In Spain, the larger clubs are permitted to play reserve sides in the lower divisions. Atletico Madrid’s B side play in the same division as Alcoron. They beat them 1-2 at the same stadium in which Real’s first side famously lost 4-0.
