Chicago in Semi Final with 2-0 Win over Revs
Chicago Fire (3) 2 : 0 (2) New England Revs
Chicago Fire will play in the Eastern Conference final against Salt Lake at Toyota Park after winning tonight’s secomnd leg 2-0 over New England Revs in Chicago. Chicago dominated the game and Steve Nicol’s Revs can have few complaints about the outcome on the night.
Marco Pappa produced a moment of magic to set up John Thorrington inside the penalty box in 35 minutes to give Chicago the lead in the first half.
In the second half, Chicago continued to dominate. On the hour Grenadian international Shalrie Joseph cleared a Dason Robinson effort of the line. Seven minutes later, substitute Mauricio Castro initially appeared to have been sent off to reduce the Revs to ten men with 23 minutes to go. He had come on at half time for Kenny Mansally, but later it turned out that referee Alex Prus had ordered him to receive treatment for a cut, and Steve Nicol decided to take him off anyway for Wells Thompson.
Cuauhtemoc Blanco hit the bar, and Thorrington had a second effort deflected away as Chicago pressed. But the defining moment was to come. Patrick Nyarko seemed to barge Emmanuel Osei off the ball in New England’s left back position. From there he found Blanco standing unmarked in the area and the Mexican legend lofted home the second.
Pat Phelan missed an excellent chance to equalise as Kenny Mansally provided him with a free header in the Chicago area, but he amazingly directed his header wide.
After five minutes of added time, Referee Alex Prus blew the final whistle to dignify the end of the tie and Chicago’s passage to the Eastern Conference final.
