It’s Houston v Seattle as Dynamo Beat Chivas 3-2
Houston Dynamo beat Chivas USA 3-2 in a thrilling Western Conference decider. The Texas side went 3-0 up but nearly threw it all away as the Goats came back to 2-3. But they held on to set up a fourth and fifth encounter with Seattle Sounders. Sounders have drawn one and won two of the three matches, including one in their winning US Open Cup run. The first leg will take place on Thursday with a 7pm kick off and ESPN2 live coverage. The second leg has been set for Sunday November 8th in Houston.
Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA will meet in a LA derby in the other quarter final.
Canadian international Andrew Hainault put Houston ahead in the 23rd minute against Chivas USA. Three minutes later Domic Oduro doubled the lead.
On form Brad Davis who tormented Seattle earlier in the season supplied the assist for both goals. The only bad news for Houston is that designated player Luis Landin has been substituted. The timing of the change just one minute before half time suggests a serious knock, that they don’t expect him to be able to run off. Abe Thompson was the replacement.
The first goal came from a corner which Ryan Cochrane headed back across goal for Hainault to finish. Oduro’s goal came after a Davis through ball split the defence. It wasn’t all one way traffic and Houston keeper Pat Onstad had been called into action twice, but foiled the Goats as Houston took control.
Abe Thompson then pounced on a seemingly wayward Geoff Cameron shot to put the Dynamo 3-0 ahead in the 52nd minute. Paulo Nagamura squared a pass for Michael Lahoud to pull a goal back for Chivas just before the hour.
Eduardo Lillingston pulled a second goal back from a penalty for Chivas to set up a thrilling finish but Houston held on and will meet Sounders FC in the next round.
Sigi Schmid was upbeat about playing the side he’s undefeated against this season. “They are a team that is competitive and they battle and they have been through a lot of big games as a unit and they don’t give things up easily. So physically they are a strong team. They have got some good size and they have got people who play the game to its full extent in a physical manner. I think we are up for those challenges and it’s just one of those things that happen. In the playoffs as a rule of the game it gets a little more physical, not dirty just a little more physical.”
