Chicago Fire 1 : 0 Chivas USA (Result) – Crew Win Supporters Shield
Sounders Dream Still Alive

Chicago Fire ended their 2009 regular season against Chivas USA tonight. A 67th minute own goal by Eduardo Lillingston from a Cuauhtemoc Blanco left wing corner has given Chicago the lead in pouring rain. It was a lead they were never to relinquish in gaining just their fifth home win of the season.
The Fire dominated a first half that saw them create several chances, but wayward finishing, the woodwork or Zac Thornton in the Chivas goal combined to foil them. To complete Lillingston’s misery, his name was spelled wrongly on his shirt.
The result means that Columbus Crew will win the Supporters Shield, and Chicago Fire make the play-offs. Chicago Fire become the sixth side to claim a place in the post season, joining Columbus Crew, Houston Dynamo, LA Galaxy, Chivas USA and the Seattle Sounders. A further six teams are competing for the two remaining slots.
Chicago finish the season on 45 points and now eyes at least in this time zone will turn to the effects of Chivas’s loss on the Western Conference.
Scenario 1 – Los Angeles Win
Los Angeles host San Jose on Saturday in a Californian derby. If they win that, they will win the Western Conference, as they have the head-to-head advantage over both Houston Dynamo and Chivas USA. The winner of that match will then take second, though if it is drawn, Sounders FC can snatch second with a win.
Scenario 2 – Los Angeles Don’t Win
If they draw that game, the winner of Sunday’s match between Houston and Chivas will win the Conference. If that game is drawn, then Houston will win it, unless Seattle Sounders beat Dallas, in which case the new kid will take first place. Los Angeles losing to the Quakes only really makes a difference if Sounders draw with Dallas, compared to them drawing. If Sounders win and LA do not on Saturday, Seattle win finish in the top two of the Western Conference and have the second leg of the next round at home.
