When the Clock Strikes Eight, It's Time to Demonstrate

Fully Supports Davies Tribute

Fully Supports Davies Tribute

The planned Sounders fan tribute to USA forward Charlie Davies will take place on Saturday. When the stadium clock begins the ninth minute, that is when the clock strikes 8.01, supporters are being asked to raise the Number Nine placard on their seats above their heads.

As most soccer fans know, Charlie was involved in a car accident in DC earlier this month. Although he is now out of intensive care, his injuries are serious and there is considerable worry about his future on the playing front. A young lady died in the accident. Fans all over the USA, and in France, have been expressing their support for his recovery, and at the suggestion of the Emerald City Supporters club, there will be an opportunity for Sounders fans to do the same in their first home game since the accident.

After some internal discussion among the club and fans about the logistics, support came from an unexpected source. Sounders FC Minority shareholder Drew Carey sent round an email offering to pay for the printing out of his own pocket. Many will not know that Drew has had a long and close relationship with the American side. He worked as a photographer at U.S. National Team soccer games, and followed the USA side to the World Cup in Germany in 2006 as an accredited soccer photographer.

But Drew did not request this publicity. When you raise your Number 9 card above your head at the start of the ninth minute, he would want as we would want, that your thoughts are entirely with Charlie Davies.

NES put together some two-poles for fans to sign – see us outside Swannies before the March and under the Hawks Nest before kick.

  4. This is why Seattle is one of the best run organizations in MLS already. Very classy move from the owner and the fans. I’m not even a Sounders fan and I’m sincerely impressed.

  7. Excellent news, thank you for reporting it.

As you mentioned, Drew’s love for the US team goes back a ways. He was on the sidelines at Azteca for the 2001 & 2005 World Cup Qualifiers between USMNT & Mexico (and other WCQ’s) as an accredited photographer. Please sing to him “Mimi’s a Mexican” (from ‘01 @ Azteca) next time you talk to him.
