Sochaux Shock Win was for ‘Charlie’
Before the match against unbeaten Olympique Lyon, Sochaux Head Coach Francis Gillot told the club website that any win against previously unbeaten Lyon would be for Charlie Davies, their forward who was lying in a DC hospital after a car crash. It seemed to be a statement full more of emotion than reality, as Lyon were unbeaten in their first eight matches, with six wins and two draws. They had scored fifteen goals in those eight games and conceded just five.
But the unthinkable and the romantic became reality as goals from Jacques Faty and Slovan Privat helped Sochaux to a shock 0-2 win at Lyon’s Stade de Gerland.
Faty scored the first after 17 minutes from a corner and Privat added the second in the 89th minute after Yassine Mikari led a breakaway.
Lyon lost for the first time in nine matches, but stayed top of the league. Their next match is with Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday. Defending champions Bordeaux wasted a chance to overtake Lyon, losing 1-0 to Auxerre. Promoted Montpellier moved level with Lyon on points with a 2-1 win over St. Etienne.

Well done to Sochaux! (And best wishes to Charlie, with hopes that he can eventually rejoin the team.) I was watching the Nancy-Marseille game as Lyon and Sochaux were playing, and I’ll never forget the shock in the announcer’s voice when he said that Sochaux had scored a second goal.
I’ve also been quite taken with the story of newly-promoted Montpellier this season. Let’s hear it for the little guys!
