EUROPE
All the matches in Europe have now finished.Ukraine confirmed their play-off place with a 0-6 away win at Andorra. This foiled any lingering hopes for Croatia who won 1-2 in Kazakhstan nevertheless.
Finland were minutes away from a shock victory in Munich against Germany after Jonatan Johansson had given them an 11th minute lead. Lukas Podolski equalised in the 89th minute to save the German blushes.
The crucial matches in Group 2 started at 11pm, and those in Group 1 45 minutes later. Portugal are play-off bound, with a 4-0 win over Malta. This would make Sweden’s result irrelevant. They beat Albania 4-1. The previously unbeaten Danes lost 0-1 at home to Hungary.
In Group 2, Greece did their bit by beating Luxembourg 2-1, but Switzerland drew 0-0 with Israel to retain first place and their place in the Finals.
In Group 3, Slovenia are 1-0 up in San Marino. This will secure them second place minimum, but even better if the Slovaks fail to win a tricky tie in Poland. But a 4th minute Seweryn Gancarczyk own goal has settled their nerves and given Slovakia a crucial lead against a demoralised Poland. The match finished 0-1 to Slovakia who win the group. Slovenia enter the play-offs.
Spain won 5-2 in Bosnia and England lead Belarus 3-0. Serbia lost 2-1 in Lithuania, their first defeat of the campaign, but have already clinched first place. France beat Austria 2-1.
Ireland drew 0-0 with Montenegro in Group 8 but Alberto Gilardino scored a hat trick in the space of just 12 minutes to rescue Italy from embarrassment. The Azzurri looked bound for an embarassing defeat to Cyprus. They were 0-2 ahead thanks too goals from Iannis Ojkkas and Chrysostomos Michail but Gilardino scored three times, to add to the late equaliser he scored against Ireland on Saturday.
