Sounders Fans and Club Unite to Show Support for Charlie Davies

Good Bars to Watch Soccer in Seattle
Wednesday, October 14, 2009

CharlieDaviesBanner USA fans at the home match with Costa Rica tonight are planning a show of support for injured striker Charlie Davies. At the ninth minute of the match at RFK Stadium in DC, fans will hold up signs with the number 9 on to let Davies know he is in their thoughts and hearts.

But the desire to show support for the FC Sochaux forward is increasing. Earlier today, Greg Mockos leader of the Emerald City Supporters Club sent out an email to the club and Seattle’s soccer media outlining his wish to see a demonstration of support for Davies at the next Sounders match. The text was as follows.

“In support of Charlie Davies, who survived a fatal car crash the other day, we would love to show our support. The US Soccer fan movement is going to show its support by holding up the following signs that people are encouraged to print out and bring to match tonight and hold up at 9th minute.

We would love for your assistance in spreading this initiative. The ECS will be printing a few hundred, but we need your help. This would be something cool to hand out at the FC Dallas match and to show support in the 9th minute.

Thanks for your support. I know this is another item to add to our busy schedules, but a large demonstration of this would show the world how tightly knit the US Soccer community is-regardless of club colors.”

The club was not slow to act and has offered to put the image up on the screens at the game in order to make sure fans at the game know the purpose of the demonstration and participate.

Other recipients of the original message have also offered support including prominent Seattle soccer site Sounder at Heart.

We too wholeheartedly endorse the gesture and have amended the original flier, which had instructions regarding use at tonight’s match in DC, for use at Sounders FC’s home match against Dallas. Please feel free to pass on the URL below to anyone who may want to participate.

Greg Mockos later explained why he thought the show of solidarity was important, “As a lifelong US Nats fan and supporter, I am deeply saddened by what Happened to Charlie Davies. I believe that the entire soccer community in America, including rabid Sounders fans, should support Charlie Davies throughout his recovery. Imagine the feeling of watching this player play again in the future and to think that just maybe the small effort we put in as fans helped him get through tough times.

It is situations like these that the bond between a player and a nation are made. It is times like these that our love for country and our bond with the US national team are sealed in stone. Get well Charlie and never give up. You can always count on us, the US Soccer nation.”
