You probably don’t need statistics to tell you how big a win that was for Sounders FC at the RFK on Saturday.  But as you were curious enough to open this thread, it’s a fair bet you want them anyway.  Courtesy of the excellently researched Sports Club Stats site, we dug out some facts, fun and figures – all of which will change of course as the season winds up to its climax.

So here goes, Sounders now have an 80% chance of making the play-offs, an astonishing rise of 26.7% as a result of the win. Other scores in the MLS yesterday boosted that a further 0.6% to a massive increase on the day of 27.3%. United’s hopes slumped 21.3% to 52.1%.

Looking forward, a win over Chivas USA next week would increase those odds a further 12.6% although a draw would decrease them 6.9%, indicating that a win is more important to the Sounders than to the Goats, probably due to the fact they have less games left than Chivas after the match. A draw would increase Chivas hopes of appearing in the post season by 3.8%. Of the other results next week, the most beneficial would be San Jose beating Colorado, which would help Seattle’s chances by 2.5%.

Looking across the globe, the home page of the site makes Sounders percentage to be Saturday’s biggest mover in any of the leagues it follows, beating out Scunthorpe United whose 4-0 win over Crystal Palace apparently reduced their chances of being relegated from England’s Championship by 20.7%. It increased the South London side’s by 12.2%.

What Do the Sounders Need to Do? – The Answer’s Still 42

According to another set of statistics on the site, Sounders are more likely than not to make the post season with just 42 points. The odds are 64.1% of those additional five points include a win, and 68.6% if they are gained by five draws. With 43 points, Sounders play-off chances rise to 90.8% if those six points include one win, and 88.4% with two defeats and three losses.

A total of 44 points from the regular season sets those odds somewhere between 98.5% and 99.1%. At 46 points, Sounders are 100% certain to reach the post season. At 49 points, Seattle’s odds of an automatic place, that is top two in the Western Conference, reach 61%. That figure could move rapidly though, as losses by Los Angeles or Houston will impact it. Sigi Schmid has consistently stated he feels 45% is necessary, but it is looking increasingly likely that 44 will be sufficient.

Of course all this will change after two more games today, when Houston and Columbus Crew meet, as do the ‘Games in Hand Twins’, New England Revs and Chivas USA.
