US Open Cup final: “A dream come true” for Levesque

Looking very relaxed and happy to be in DC for the Cup Final as perhaps a fan would, we caught up with Sounders cult hero, Roger Levesque in the team’s DC hotel in Washington DC, where we talked about winning trophies with the Sounders, his goal in Portland that set the side en route in their only other away game in this tournament, and his family from Portland (Maine) coming down to DC to see the Open Cup final.

PROST AMERIKA: Is this your first Cup final?

ROGER LEVESQUE: Yes, absolutely, we’ve been in the semi-final the last two years with the USL team, haven’t made it to a final, so yes this will be the first one.

PROST AMERIKA: Have you been told whether you’ll be starting or on the bench yet?

ROGER LEVESQUE: No, we’ll figure it out tomorrow. I am just excited to be a part of it; the whole team’s here. It’s great that the whole team will get to experience it, the game, and then hopefully the celebration afterwards.

PROST AMERIKA: You have experience of winning trophies with the Sounders two years ago when they won the USL trophy.

ROGER LEVESQUE: (smiles) Yes.

“The guys on this team know what it’s like to win.”

PROST AMERIKA: So have you been telling the others what it’s like to win something with Seattle?

ROGER LEVESQUE: Well, you know, everyone comes from all walks of life, has played in different leagues. I actually went through today and different guys were saying the numbers of championships they’d won and to be fair, there’s guys who’ve won championships all the way up through so I think the guys on this team know what it’s like to win, they know what it’s like to play in a final and win a final.

PROST AMERIKA: You’re one of only two that have actually scored in this competition away from Seattle. So have you been lording it over the others just telling them what an away goal looks like in the cup?

ROGER LEVESQUE: No, not at all–you know, we have such talented players on this team that any one of them can score on any given day so hopefully any number of guys can score a goal. It doesn’t matter who it is as long as the ball goes into the back of the net.

PROST AMERIKA: And what would it mean to you personally to win the trophy with the MLS Sounders?

ROGER LEVESQUE: Oh absolutely, anytime you get a chance to play in a final it’s a dream come true. Not many guys get to experience that and then actually win. This competition has been a thorn in our side, especially the USL guys over the last three or four years so I know to finally get out there and get to play in it and hopefully win would be absolutely amazing.

PROST AMERIKA: Did you manage to persuade any friends or relatives to come down from the ‘real’ Portland?

ROGER LEVESQUE: I did, yeah. My dad and his wife are coming down, my sister and her husband , they actually live in Charlottesville so they’ll be up for the game too.

PROST AMERIKA: Will they be sitting with the other Sounders fans?

ROGER LEVESQUE: Absolutely. Wholeheartedly wearing green, that’s for sure.
