US Open Cup Build up: Sounders v DC Photo Gallery
What's 75 Days Between Friends?
Sounders FC have only met the pride of the other Washington once yet. On Wednesday, June 17, the two sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at Qwest Field, but even then, that only tells a fraction of the story.
Sounders had played superbly against a top drawer opponent and led 3-1 as the closing phase of the match approached. Sounders had come back from a Chris Pontius opener in the 31st minute to swamp their visitors with three unanswered goals from Osvaldo Alonso, an own goal by Marc Burch and Fredy Montero. With less than half an hour to go, Sounders should have been closing the game out. The record books show an alternative ending as a lackadaisical Sounders side allowed DC United two goals back to force a tie.
After the match, a furious Kasey Keller vented his frustrations at the lack of team discipline to the press pack and warned of repercussions if things didn’t improve.
One person who didn’t lose concentration that day was Prost Amerika photographer, Joe Armand. To whet your appetite for the big match ahead, he’s produced a photo gallery of that last tempestuous and eventful meeting of the two sides.
