And We Don't Mean the Spanish Flag

Getafe_cfSpain’s illustrious league championship, known simply as La Liga, opened this weekend. There were predictable wins for the usual suspects, Real Madrid beating Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 at the Bernabeu.

Real Zaragoza won the battle of the promoted sides against Tenerife, and the other newcomers Xerez lost 2-0 in Mallorca. Getafa go momentarily top after an impressive 1-4 away win at Santander, Rafael López opened the scoring for them before a Roberto Soldado hat trick completed the rout.

Most notably of all there were 46 yellow cards in just nine games. Newly promoted Xerez, (yes it means sherry) managed to have two players ejected, Nivaldo Batista Santana of Valladolid received his marching orders and former West Ham player Frederick Kanoute was also sent off playing for Sevilla at Valencia.

Top of the yellow card league were Espanyol with six, followed by Tenerife’s five and Atlético Madrid with a meagre four. Bilbao’s two took the total in their game with Espanyol to eight. Barcelona play Sporting Gijón tomorrow.
