One last result today could have broken the interminable stream of bad results which characterised this weekend, making Seattle’s run-in to the play offs just that little bit tougher. A loss for Colorado at league leaders Houston would have slightly dented their charge and taken some traffic out of the congestion around the narrow door that leads to the post season.
But any hope that table topping Houston Dynamo might do the Sounders a favour by beating the Colorado Rapids were dashed by Frenchman Julien Baudet’s 55th minute goal in Denver.
The former Crewe Alexandra defender has played just two games for the Rapids who haven’t even had a chance to add his bio to their website yet, but we can tell you he played for Notts County, Rotherham United, Oldham Athletic and Toulouse before joining Crewe in North West England. His most notable match for Crewe appears to have been in a 5-1 thumping at Northampton in which he was sent off in the 18th minute. He played in all nine of Crewe’s winless finish on the 2008/9 season.
On July 26, 2009 Baudet made his competitive home debut for Colorado Rapids, breaking his arm in the first half after colliding with Sinisa Ubiparipovic in midair, with the debutant coming down hard on his wrist. Baudet was helped off the field with a cast on his left wrist, and preliminary reports from the field were that the central defender broke his wrist on the fall. Adding insult to his injury, ‘Le Malade Pas Imaginaire’ was shown a caution for the reckless play, with the announcement coming as he was being taken to an ambulance to head out to the hospital.
He seems to have recovered and his goal today earned him Colorado’s Man of the Match Award. Colorado’s win sends them technically into the top eight as one of the four clubs on 33 points. They are truly one of those seven sides battling for those last four play-off places.
New York Red Bulls beat Columbus Crew 1-0 late on Sunday.
