16 Games without Defeat Impacts the Record Books

July 19

portland_timbersPortland Timbers underlined just how good a season they are having by surpassing Montreal Impact’s record of 16 regular season games without defeat.

A 3-0 win in Miami became their 16th consecutive USL regular season match without defeat. Goals from George Josten in the 50th minute, and Keith Savage five minutes later secured the record before former Swedish league player Antou Jallow added the Timbers third in the 77th minute.

2009 07 01_4062_edited-1Earlier in the week, they had equaled Montreal’s record of 15 games when David Hayes playing his 250th match for the Timbers saved them a point against the same opponents.

The impressive 33-year-old former Atlanta defender propped up in the 78th minute to rescue a draw for Portland. Hayes’ equaliser came from a 25-yard free kick, just twelve minutes from time against Miami. Midfielder Orlando Bueso had earlier given the Florida side the lead.

Portland are now equal top of the USL with the Puerto Rico Islanders on 34 points after the Islanders had beaten Montreal earlier in the day. Portland have three games in hand. The two league leaders meet at PGE Park, Portland on July 23rd.
