Merseyside Club Breaks with Tradition to Issue Comment

May 21

Liverpool Football Club have today issued a statement in response to the growing furore over the controversial comments made about the Hillsborough disaster by Fox Soccer Channel presenter Steven Cohen. Cohen, who presents the Fox Football Fone-in and also hosts another show on Sirius radio, made some comments about the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans 200 years ago which many have deemed offensive.

A war of words had broken out between Liverpool fans and Cohen which has led to a boycott of certain firms who advertise on his show. Now the issue is even less likely to go away after the intervention of EPL giants, Liverpool.

Liverpool Football Club Official Statement

“Liverpool Football Club totally condemns the comments regarding the Hillsborough disaster made by the radio and TV broadcaster Steve Cohen.

Mr Cohen has obviously never taken the time to read the Taylor Report which stated clearly that ticketless fans were not a contributory factor or responsible for the events of that day.

To use the 20th anniversary of the disaster to repeat false claims about Liverpool fans (which Mr Cohen first broadcast and then apologised for in 2006) is even more unacceptable.”

This is somewhat unusual according to Conor Brennan of the New York based Liverpool supporters group, since Liverpool FC usually prefer to let the families of those who died speak on Hillsborough-related matters.
