Chivas v Sounders Mindless Statistical Match Preview
Sounders Looking for Odd Hat-trick
April 16
Sounders FC are conceding a goal on average once every six hours, whereas Chivas are scoring one every 45 minutes. Both goals Chivas have conceded have come from the left foot, and both were struck from inside the six yard box. Neither side has scored or conceded a header. Neither side has scored or conceded from a set piece, i.e., a corner, free kick or penalty.
The first goal has decided the winner of all Sounders games but Chivas won on opening day having lost the opening goal to Colorado Rapids. The same Rapids were the last side to win away at Chivas (1-2) on October 19, 2008.
Atiba Harris leads Chivas on both fouls committed (16) and fouls suffered (9). Nate Jaqua has committed 13 for the Sounders and Fredy Montero has suffered 11.
Four of Chivas’ six goals have come in the 15 minutes after half-time. Only one of their six has come in the first half. Both the goals they have conceded were scored before the interval.
The 350 minutes Sounders went without conceding a goal was the second longest shutout streak to start a season in MLS history, surpassing the 344 minutes set by the Dallas Burn in 1999, but still 71 minutes short of the New York Red Bulls’ 2007 record.
Kasey Keller’s individual shutout streak of 299 minutes will remain intact should he start the next game that he’s available. He is 76 minutes short of the record to begin the season set by former Red Bulls goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus (375) in 2007.
Five players have played all 360 minutes for Chivas USA so far: Jonathan Bornstein, Jesse Marsch, Carey Talley, Shavar Thomas and goalkeeper Zach Thornton. Brad Evans, Ossie Alonso, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Tyrone Marshall and James Riley are Seattle’s ever presents
The official statistics say that Ben Dragavon has played 59 minutes and Kasey Keller 259, meaning that technically Seattle played two minutes without a goalkeeper.
Chivas’ next game is next Wednesday in Toronto. Seattle host San Jose next Saturday.
Sigi Schmid has only won one game out of six against Chivas, drawing two and losing three, with an average of 0.83 points a game. Two Sounders players have scored against Chivas for other clubs, Nate Jaqua (4) and Peter Vagenas (3).
Maykel Galindo has played on both sides of the rivalry, playing for Seattle in 2006 while a member of the Sounders, and then for Chivas USA in 2007. He is doubtful for this game with a Sports hernia surgery.
Both sides played Shandong Luneng Taishan in pre season matches with Chivas winning theirs 5-1.
Seattle Sounders have drawn Chivas USA two years running in the US Open Cup, beating them 2-0 in 2008 and 3-1 in 2007. Seb Le Toux scored twice and Roger Levesque the other in 2007, and Taylor Graham and Le Toux again scored the goals in 2008. 2,997 watched the game last year and 3,589 the game in 2007.
