Red Bulls Affected by Beckham Upheaval
Sounders First Opponents Move Fixture due to LA’s Milan Friendly
March 9
In a move certain to further irritate US soccer fans, New York Red Bulls have been forced to schedule their MLS game against LA Galaxy two days earlier. The match originally scheduled for July 18th will now take place on July 16th. Kick off time has not yet been announced. All tickets bought for the original date will be honoured.
The match between New York and LA at Giants Stadium is due to be Beckham’s first match back in the USA after he returns from Milan.
Erik Stover, Managing Director, New York Red Bulls told their web site, “While moving our match creates some challenges for us and our fans, overall, we feel that this is a positive development. The match will remain an exciting date on the Red Bulls 2009 schedule.”
Milan and LA Galaxy agreed a glamour friendly in Los Angeles scheduled for July 19th as part of the compensation package and this seems to be the main reason behind the move. Giants Stadium has a capacity of 80,242 and with the match being Beckham’s first back in the USA, interest will be huge. It may also be the first gauge of the US public’s reaction to his self-interested shenanigans over the the last few months and his apparently derisory attitude towards MLS soccer.
